WHAT IS YOGA?

Yoga is the journey
OF the self
THROUGH the self
TO the self.

Yoga has a great many meanings to a great many people.  The yogic sciences comprise countless disciplines and lineages.  The term “yog” (yoga) from Sanskrit can be translated as “to yoke”.  To yoke to what, exactly?  To your (“higher”) self.  To God.  To universal consciousness.  To your own potential as a human being here & now in this life.  The list goes on and on.  Perhaps a better question is, what is yoga, TO YOU?

In short, it can be said that any form of self-work is yoga.  That being said… yoga can be thought of a detailed user’s manual, for living here & now in these miraculous human bodies on this majestic Earth realm.  Have you read the user’s manual?

By our current society at large, we have not been well taught regarding some very basic things.  These include how to live and function well here in these human bodies, or even what we are!  Most of us have not been taught how to consciously move, eat, think or even breathe.  Truth is all around us.  How glorious when we learn to see it with our own eyes!  This doesn’t come without conscious effort; it’s a PRACTICE.  People have been figuring this out for ages, and have left us detailed maps and instructions.  Chief among these are the yogic, Vedic, and other sciences of self-work.

We’ve been taught to maintain our automobile, in which we spend maybe 1 hour per day or so.  Some of us do this better than others.  We check the oil level, tire pressure, filters, keep the interior and exterior clean, polished and free of trash.  Good wiper blades and tires… all the lightbulbs and mechanical systems working properly.  Allowing a wild bear to eat roadkill in the backseat?  We wouldn’t think of it!

How do we treat the vehicles in which we spend nearly 24 hours of every day?  Just as we make a conscious effort to maintain our automotive vehicle, we can also do so with the vehicles much more precious to us.   Regular yoga practice offers us a priceless tool for working on ourselves on many levels simultaneously.  We can intentionally work on the condition of our physical, energetic, emotional, psychological and mental selves.

As a musician tunes his or instrument before a performance, we too can tune our bodies for the performance of life.

Let’s get started!  Now is the Time.
